6 Power Drill Safety Tips

A power drill is not a complicated device. But with all power tools, safety needs to be respected. Imagine having a drill bit snap and end up lodged in your eye. 1. Don't wear long sleeves or loose clothing when drilling. Depending on the type of drill, a piece of clothing caught in the bit and wind up clothing extremely fast. Having your sleeve caught in the drill will cause extreme amounts of pain when there is no more sleeve left to get tangled.

2. Using a dust mask can help prevent you from inhaling your project. Even something as simple as wood can cause pain and bleeding in your respiratory tract.

3. As a general rule, always make sure your work is clamped down securely. Having a piece of metal or wood kick out and a drill bit go in to your leg would not be a pleasant experience.

4. Don't force the drill to drill. Instead, let the machine do its job. This goes for sanding as well.

5. You should always start off very slow and work up to a higher speed. Starting off fast is only going to have the drill bit dance around and end up other than in your work.

6. And finally, take your time. The number one reasons accidents happen in the shop is from people rushing. If it takes 2 minutes to drill through a piece of sheet metal, don't try to get it done in 30 seconds.

Preparing Your Pressure Washer For the Cold Winter Months

Now that you have purchased and enjoyed your pressure washer during the warm months, it's time to get ready for the cold winter months. If you live in an areas where the temperature never goes below freezing you may not need to do anything, but check your owner manual for yearly maintenance. Taking care of your pressure washer before the cold sets in will save you time and money in the spring.

Most pressure washer parts are made of plastic, brass or aluminum and each of these materials are soft and will break as water is left inside and freezes. Even though you may have not used the pressure washer in a while it still may contain water behind valves that may freeze and break the unit.

The following is a basic list of steps to take with your washer to prepare it for the winter months. Always check with your owner's manual for specific information about winter storage.

1. Disconnect the wand and hold the valve open and turn upside down; blowing air from a portable air compressor through the wand will insure that the wand has no water in it. In some pressure washers the wand cannot be removed from the hose, if you have one of these skip to # 2.

2. Remove the hose from the unit and drain all the water from it, use an air compressor to blow air through the hose if you have one. Coil the hose up and tie it in a small circle and hang it up on a wall or put on a shelf to store.

3. Look in your manual or on the bottom of the pump see if it has a drain plug for the water chamber, make sure your have the right drain plug, some unit have oil to cool and lubricate the pump. Once you have taking out the drain plug make sure the unit it unplugged and turn the pump or motor a couple of time to make sure all of the water is out of the pump chamber. The pump may turn hard and it may take two people to do this step. Store the plug somewhere safe and don't put it back in the pump, this will insure that no water will collect in the bottom of the pump.

4. If you have a soap or cleaning agent dispenser remove all the liquid and rinse out the container with water, put the liquid soap in a storage bottle and store it in the house to be used next year.

5. Now I recommend covering the unit with a small tarp or a heavy garbage bag to keep the dirt and dust off the unit. If you store it outside make sure you use a tarp and tie it on very well or us a couple of bungee cords. Make sure to store you pressure washer by itself and do not stack thing on top of it.

6. Now some unit have a built in hot water heater, use the same steps in #3 to drain the water from the heating chamber.

If you decide to use your pressure washer during the winter, don't forget to go through these steps again to make sure there is no water in the unit that can freeze and cost you big time repairs. Even if you have a heated garage or storage unit I still recommend preparing your unit for winter. A little work now and some tender care of your pressure washer will ensure years of care free use and saving in time and money. The Gas Chainsaw Has Come a Long Way

The gas chainsaw is a portable mechanical, motorized saw. It's most common use is logging, such as felling and delimbing trees. Other uses are storm cleanup, pruning small trees, cutting firewood, used by firefighters for containing wildfires, construction crews, and specially designed blades have been developed as tools for chainsaw art. Gas chainsaws usually have two sources of lubrication. The two stroke engine contains 2 - 5% oil which is mixed and dissolves with the fuel.

As for the history of the gas chainsaw, Dolmar claims to have produced the first gas powered chainsaw in 1927 which required more than one man to operate. It was not until 1952 that Dolmar developed a one man gas powered chainsaw. Since then Dolmar like all the other leading brands has continued with improving their saws. In 2000 they released a new line of professional chainsaws with a new air filtering system. They also released a prototype of their new 4-stroke chainsaw. I my self have a dolmar gas chainsaw, but it is 20 years old and a very good saw at that, it's always been reliable the only thing I had to do is replace a couple of spark plugs, that's not bad for 20 years. As for the newer line of pro saws and the newer 4-stroke engine saws, these saws are fairly new and I personally have had no experience with these models.

With a large selection, these companies have developed a wide variety of high tech, high powered and reliable chainsaws with a large selection of features. All of these companies advertise some of the same as well as some different features. Poulans gas chainsaw are more for the homeowners, landowners and farmers. Poulans selection range is more like small saws for tree pruning to like what I call a midrange saw to use for storm cleanup, cutting firewood or maybe even small logging operations such as cutting pulp wood. The others I have mentioned, Dolmar, Husqvarna and Stihl are the complete package all the way up to the professional line. I also have a small model husqvarna and it's great for pruning, delimbing trees that's been cut down by a larger saw and even cutting firewood on trees up to 10 inches in diameter.

With Dolmars gas chainsaw topping out at 6.9hp, Husqvarna and Stihl boost over 8hp in the professional models, that's some serious power. These professional models are a tough high performance piece of equipment. Some are built with high engine torque, resulting in an impressive power-to-weight ratio which is great for forest and trees services. Some, but not all claim improvements and features like air injection, improved handle design, three piece crankshafts, toolless quick chain adjuster, toolless fuel and oil caps with retainers and purge pump primers.

It's no doubt the gas chainsaw has come a long way, no matter what your job theirs a high quality and durable saw out there that anyone can use.
